View Full Version : The Evolution of the Controller

Over all the years of playing games, all the consoles youve experienced, which one had the best controller? by best i mean, what had the overall best feel, features and look?

Lets take it back

The OG controller. Fuck all these triangle, circle, x, square, left trigger right trigger underneath trigger joypad nonsense. all u need is a rectangle, control pad and an A and B button lol. Probably the least comfortable of the lot, but u gotta give it points for the retro look haha.

Sega Megadrive/Genesis

Getting some sleekness in there, and we got a c button  . didnt play sega too much so cant really comment on how good this was

Super Nintendo

This is prob my 2nd fav controller. its comfy and theres a lot you could do with it for the games at the time.

Including all the PS controllers as one, since they are all basically the same. looks great, much better to grip and the two joysticks and dual shock feature makes this one my fav.

looked pretty cool, but i always found that middle elongated handle unnecessary. the yellow buttons being seperate to the red and blue ones always bothered me too, it was like having 2 controllers on the one thing with different button layouts.

Again, kinda fiddly and weird shaped, but it was a bit better than the n64 one imo. i liked how the joysticks werent aligned, made it a bit easier to execute some things.

The first xbox controller is the worst controller ever designed imo. shit is disgusting. way too big, too many buttons all over the place and an unnecessary large logo in the middle..uugghh. the 360 version is much better, but its basically an imitation ps controller. it does look the sleekest out of all of them tho

the PSX controller was by far the best design, you could play for hours and not get hand cramps, all the buttons we're easy to reach no matter what your hand size was. also the buttons are in the right spots and with each finger having a button it made games a lot funner especially with the fighting games like tekken.

2nd goes to the the Dreamcast controller. The second you play your hand over the controller it felt like home to your hands, the buttons felt good when you pushed down the joystick was good but could be better. having the center screen was a nice idea but it was just useless waste of controller room.

3rd the SNES controller, no sharp edges, no "way out there" design. just a play simple and easy to use controller that felt good in your hands, plus it was the first controller with the "L & R" buttons. with the buttons being a full sold color you could easily look down with out taking your eyes off the screen if you need to see what you we're hitting.

Gamecube...WTF where they smoking when they made that?

Definitely the XBOX 360 controller, my favorite <3333...

The PS1, and PS2 controllers are nice too.

I loved the first XBOX controller, I always thought the size was good though, people didn't like, but I thought it was cool.

The NES that was my first videogame console ever, I love just because of that.

The N64 is my second videogame console, and I love just because of that too.

But my favorite system is definitely the XBOX 360 <333333333.

lol Dreamcast killed it. I loved the memory drive 1st of its kind with the lil screen and u could take it out and play games in it also that shit was great. But Ps1 controler was prob the 1st to be more of a comfortable fit.

still got our super nitendo, sega mega drive, and ps3 now. i loved em all equally and differently... if im talkin comfyness has to be super nitendo, but i played on sega most, got blisters on my thumbs from it but wudnt change it at all!
the thing i like bout ps controllers, it allows more different techniques obviously, more combos, more actions etc.

the least comfy and akwardest was the amstrad, really couldnt do much, it was in ways weaker than playin games on the PC, which i jus dont do unless their online games, cba buyin em!
