Rhymefest, Justus League, Others Honor The Roots
May 1st, 2008 | Author: Jake Paine

In the wake of recent comments from The Roots' drummer, producer and band-leader ?uestlove that Def Jam has not given them the proper marketing and promotion considerations, fans and artists have taken it upon themselves to honor the Philadelphia Hip Hop band upon releasing their Rising Down album.

Chicago-based blog RubyHornet.com sought the opinions of artists and fans to share their favorite Roots song, video or simply pay homage to the group. Among those who contributed, Kidz In The Hall's Naledge, Souls of Mischief's Opio and rising star Mickey Factz all shared.

Rhymefest said, "My favorite Roots song has to be 'Silent Treatment' because it so accurately describes the dynamic of what a man wants and what a woman deserves." Meanwhile, Justus League affiliate Chaundon added, "'You Got Me...This is the jawn of all jawns! Thought painted such a vivid picture, I saw the video before the director yelled, 'Action!' The music was incredible. [That song] is the definition of a marriage between the beat and the rhyme. But I must say '75 Bars' is my second favorite video. One of the meanest videos out if not the meanest video out!!! The track is violent and Thought went in [saying], 'I'm in the field with a shield and a spear nigga, I'm in your girl with her heels in the air nigga.' Damn."

The complete series of entries, which is said to be adding daily, is at RubyHornet.

In related news, representatives at Island/Universal have confirmed that The Roots' merchandise manager has been fired, perhaps in response to the group's qualms with marketing and promotion.
