Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has declared that plans are in place in case of relegation from the Premier League.

The Black Cats have been made to scrap in their first season back in the top flight and are currently just two points above the drop zone.

Quinn is confident of survival and is hoping to be able to provide more funds to further establish Sunderland as a Premier League club, but he insists all possibilities are being budgeted for.

"We'd love to be safe and then it would be easy to plan," he said in the Mirror.

"This is a really tense time, the reality is we have to prepare for both sides of the outcome.

"It's not something I like talking about and I don't want to be negative, but it would be bad management not to have a Plan B in place. We have different situations covered."

Quinn believes that if Sunderland can stave off the threat of relegation they should go from strength to strength next term.

He said: "All being well it'll be Plan A we'll be putting into place. Come the end of the season, if we've managed to stay up, we'll have a platform from which to step forward.

"Being realistic, we needed to go on a journey and we know we can't go to the top straight away, there'll be a couple of stop-offs.

"The first stage of the journey went exceptionally well and this stage is about consolidating."
