Andy Johnson's second-half goal gave Everton a hard-fought win after a battling encounter at the Stadium of Light.

Keane felt his side deserved something out of the game with chances few and far between on Wearside.

"I felt the players deserved something for their efforts," Keane told Sky Sports News. "Obviously there were no clear-cut chances for both teams, but Everton took their chance and we didn't.

"I suppose it was a [scrappy goal] particularly from our point of view. It was sloppy play, we gave the ball away cheaply and never quite recovered and obviously Everton took full advantage of that.

"It was very much a bad goal to give away from our point of view.

"Unfortunately we didn't really start to play until we went a goal down and we really should have started quicker.

"The last 20-25 minutes I thought we played particularly well in terms of keeping the ball and creating a few chances.

"Credit to their keeper, Tim [Howard] made some excellent saves in the last few minutes.

"It is cruel on the players, I felt they deserved a little bit better."
