Asante Samuel Close to Free Agent Deal with Eagles

Atlanta, GA 2/29/2008 05:02 PM GMT (FINDITT)

New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel is close to signing a deal with the Eagles during his visit in Philadelphia Friday. Samuel is an unrestricted free agent.

NFL free agency started at midnight on Friday, allowing many free agents to visit teams to narrow and open up their options.

Apparently, this will be Samuel's only visit, with the sides close to striking a six-year deal that could be worth a maximum of $60 million if Samuel reaches all his incentives.

Samuel was named to the Pro Bowl team and the All-Pro Team this past season. In 2006, he tied with Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey to lead the league in interceptions with 10.

Samuel is one of the league's most sought-after free agents.

The Eagles recently released Jevon Kearse, a former Pro Bowl defensive end. Kearse was in the middle of a $66 million, eight-year deal signed in 2004 that made him at the time the highest-paid defensive end in NFL history.

His release gave the Eagles an additional $2.585 million in salary-cap room, allowing them to sign Samuel.

Yeah they been working on getting a receiver but it's been hard trying to get one. They tried to sign Randy Moss, trade for Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin. Nobody will give them anything. They offering Lito Sheppard now that they got Samuel and their first round pick but nobody's biting so they probably gonna draft one. Either Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed or Desean Jackson. But they will be a top team next year if McNabb, Dawkins and Westbrook stay healty. People forget they've won the NFC East 5 of the last 7 years, have been to 1 Super Bowl and 4 NFC Championship games during that time period.
