Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury will have surgery on his left ankle and is out indefinitely.

Marbury decided to have surgery after an MRI on Thursday during a second visit with Dr. William Hamilton, a specialist who earlier this week found that Marbury had inflammation around a chronically fractured bone spur. The surgery is expected to be on Tuesday.

Marbury said Wednesday he would try to return this season, even if the Knicks are well out of the playoff race. He has had this surgery before and was sidelined for most of the summer.

Marbury has missed the past three games -- all victories. The Knicks are 6-8 without him this season and 6-18 with him.

Marbury is averaging a career-low 13.9 points during what has been the most difficult season of his career. He sat out 10 games after his father died during the Knicks' home loss to the Suns on Dec. 2, and also skipped a game in Phoenix after clashing with coach Isiah Thomas over his potential removal from the starting lineup.

Fred Jones has been starting during Marbury's latest absence, with leading scorer Jamal Crawford handling most of the point guard duties.
