Tvt Records Hit With Lawsuit By Cash Money Records

TVT Records and its CEO Steve Gottlieb were recently hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit by New Orleans-based Cash Money Records, according to New York's Daily News.

Cash Money Records is attempting to block TVT Records from using the Cash Money trademark in connection with an upcoming release by Ja Rule and the Cash Money Clic.

Cash Money Records' attorney Brad Rose told the Daily News, "We want to prevent confusion in the marketplace."

Ja Rule was signed to TVT Records as a member of the Cash Money Clic in the mid-'90s. The rapper went on to sign a solo deal with Def Jam Records through Irv Gotti's Murder Inc Records.

The latest lawsuit is but another setback that TVT Records must overcome before the set is released. In May the label thwarted Island Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen and Def Jam Records attempt to block the release of the album.

A New York jury found Cohen and Def Jam guilty of fraud, copyright infringement, and breach of contract, and ordered them to pay $131 million to TVT Records.

TVT Records filed the lawsuit against Cohen and Def Jam when the company pulled out of an agreement to release the Irv Gotti-produced album by Ja Rule and the Cash Money Clic in November of 2002. At the time, TVT Records had spent more than $1 million to record and market the project.

Cohen and Def Jam Records are appealing the verdict.
