FOR JACKSON, ONE LAWSUIT DOWN, ONE MILLION TO GO
Auction house settles with superstar.

*Recently the Sotheby's art dealer announced that
it settled a lawsuit against Michael Jackson which resulted
after the star refused to pay for some expensive paintings.
He was said to have owed $1.4 million for two 19th
century paintings he bought from the auction house last
year but no longer wanted.
Diana Phillips, senior vice president for the New York
auction house, told Reuters that the case had been resolved
amicably but the terms were not being disclosed.
The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, alleged
Jackson's Los Angeles company MJJ Productions
successfully bid on two paintings by French artist
William Adolphe Bourgereau on Oct. 29, 2002.
One of the paintings shows Cupid removing a thorn
from his foot and the other is a portrait of a young woman
with a child and a sheep. The lawsuit said Jackson did not
dispute that his company bought the paintings or that he
has been billed for them. However, it said Jackson's
company refused to pay for the art because Jackson
no longer believed the paintings fit into his collection.
