Chapter II is Ashanti’s follow up to massive acclaimed self-titled debut album.
The lead single “Rock Wit U” is a nice fast tempo song with Ashanti’s beautiful and powerful voice, it has a nice summer vibe to it, which her mainstream fans should love. One disappointment with song is she doesn’t have that much to say just the one verse repeated over with a chorus in between it. As for the skit after the song how on heavens earth did she allow that to be on her album it’s irritating and annoying.
If you were expecting the rest of the album to be the same type of song as the lead single then be surprised we are treated to a few too many slow tracks. “Breakup 2 Makeup2 has a lovely smooth beat and wind chimes in the back round and Ashanti’s voice is very powerful compared to previous recordings. It may be sampled from Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing” but Irv Gotti still puts his touch on it to make it just right.
“I Found Lovin” relies heavily on the 80’s sampled beat and machine effects, once again Ashanti’s lyrics are just about up to scratch and her voice really shines she really lets us know she Found Love. “Rain on Me ” is very 60’s/70’s style song Ashanti lets us know what she is feeling on this track and is very down hearted good song but not a great song.
“Then Ya Gone” is a really good song Ashanti’s lyrics are really good but why did they have to stick Chink Santana in every 30 seconds to say “Then Ya Gone” Gotti we didn’t need that you have a really good song but without your so called partner in crime. “Living My Life” is basically one of those filler tracks its just Ashanti talking bout holding her parents hands and using lines from he hit singles poor. “Black Child Skit” what can I say what’s the point we are not given a taste of what to expect from him because every second word is a curse word.
“Feel So Good” is opened very nicely with loud trumpets and Irv Gotti welcoming us to the album and Ashanti once again lets the power of her voice do its thing and mixing it in with her smooth voice for the chorus. As for “Carry On” once again nice production from Irv Gotti and Ashanti shows us another side of her voice, she may be moaning bout some dude not treating her nice but the lyrics and production are well put together. “The Story of 2” is introduced by “The Sugar Shack Skit” and is in my opinion the best song on the album the piano work is excellent and Ashanti’s smooth voice carries throughout the track and leaves the track with her and her label mates signature saying but says it in a way not said before in her smooth sexy voice “It’s Murda”.
“Ohhh Ahhh” is nicely done her voice nice and smooth. “Sweet Baby” once again the chemistry between Ashanti and Irv Gotti is shown on this track and they even sneak a few lines from he label mate Ja Rule who we were told would not be appearing on this album. “U Say I Say” would be another one of those fillers it features an unknown RnB singer named Gunnz who doesn’t really help the track. “I Don’t Mind” well we get nice calm mellow beats and we get to listen Irv Gotti breath and talk aload of crap I would say this is a good track but not a great track.
You won’t be disappointed with this album but you won’t be labelling it as a classic either. Ashanti has taken a step up vocally from her Debut album and the production is great. The skits are a waste of time the two intro’s and outro are not that great either Chink Santana didn’t help.
