MIO EXCLUSIVE: 7 INTERVIEW

IT'S 2007 PEOPLE, HAPPY NEW YEAR! AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO BEGIN THE YEAR THAN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ONE AND ONLY 7! THIS TIME IT'S THE REAL DEAL, THE FULL INTERVIEW..SIT BACK AND ENJOY (SHOUT TO 7!!!)

MIO: What inspired you to step out of your usual role of producer, and start working as an artist on a full length album ?

7: It is important to remember that even the universe wants to expand. In addition everything phases. The first part of my carer I saw a great deal of success early, I had more number 1 records in my first year than Dr. Dre, Timberland, Kanye or Pharrell did in their first years on the scene. Irv and I were killing the game, holding down the number 1, 2, 3 and 5 spot on the pop charts for like 18 weeks. And because it happened to me like it did, I had to recharge so I got a mansion in Miami. While I was in Miami, Lenny Kravitz was my neighbor, we became good friends. One night me, Lionel Richie and Lenny Kravitz were all sitting in my studio/living room and in walks his then girlfriend Nicole Kidman. The 'movie' I was living in Miami, was incredible, so during the time no one heard a lot from me and Irv. I was on hiatus, I was experiencing the most incredible movie in Miami. I also saw 'the rock star movie' hanging with Lenny. It was different from the movie I was living in L.A. and New York with Hip Hop. This was very appealing to me but I would still keep that Hip Hop energy and mix that up into a style that was mine. A Sev/flow so to speak. I needed to nurture my spirit during this time, so I began to study Kabbalah with a teacher in Miami. That was the last piece to the puzzle that I needed to start the next phase of my journey and career; stepping out as the artist. I had a vision much like the one I saw my name would be in, and it was revealed that everything I had accomplished to that point, was all a rehearsal for my time as an artist; and that the world would understand and accept me first the way that it came. But also I knew that there was only one person who could successfully introduce me to the world as an artist, and it was the same one who broke me to the world as a hit- making producer...IRV GOTTI!

MIO: Tell us about your album 'Channel 7'. Why did you choose that as your album title?

7:  I DON'T FEEL ITS THE RIGHT TIME TO REVEAL EVERY ASPECT OF THE ALBUM AND TITLE. AND I DON'T WANT TO PUT ANY BOUNDARIES ON THE MINDS OF THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED OR TAINT ANYONE'S VISION OF WHAT IT MAY MEAN TO THEM. JUST LET IT UNRAVEL LIKE A GOOD MYSTERY SHOULD.

MIO: As we already know, 'V' and Rule have been working with you on the album. Who else have you been working with in terms of artists and producers?

7:  FOR THIS PROJECT IRV IS THE ONLY OTHER PRODUCER. BUT THE RECORDS I HAVE WITH V  & RULE I FEEL ARE MY BEST RECORDS EVER. JA & V ARE IN RARE FORM.  AS FAR AS OTHER ARTIST... I HAVE A FEW  SURPRISES I FEEL ARE "MAJOR EVENT" MOMENTS ON CHANNEL 7. FOR EXAMPLE A RECORD CALLED "3007".  YOU DO THE MATH.

MIO: You seem to be a very intellectual and spiritual person. Can we expect to hear any sort of message or concept? In other words is there any desired effect you would want, after someone has finished listening to Channel 7?

7:  THE "EFFECT"  FROM CHANNEL 7 IS THE "CAUSE".
SEPARATELY...EVERY RECORD I'VE EVER MADE HAS
BEEN A REHEARSAL FOR THIS ALBUM. (BLI AN HARA)  SO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED, BUT KNOW ITS GONNA BE CRAZY.

MIO: I've been hearing that a lot of your records are serious problems, and will make a lot of noise next year. Any particular record that you think will have the people just stop and say '....WOW, that's amazing!'?

7:  "M.A.K.E.L.O.V.E.T.O.M.E "  AND "HELLO"

MIO: When do you plan to release the first single, and more importantly the date of the album?

7:  SINGLES 1.17.07  / ALBUM 7.7.07

MIO: Will this be the first of many instalments in 7's artist discography, or is this just a one off project you wanted to do?

7:  I HAVE OVER 1200 HOURS OF UNRELEASED MUSIC. AND I AM ULTRA INSPIRED BY THE NEW YEAR. LOOK FOR NEW MUSIC ON MY BAND BLACK MADONNA WITHIN THE YEAR . WITHOUT GIVING TOO MUCH AWAY, THERE ARE 3 CHANNEL 7 ALBUMS THAT ALL GO TOGETHER LIKE THE HARRY POTTER & SPIDER MAN FRANCHISES . THE NEXT INSTALLEMENT OF THE CHANNEL 7 ALBUMS WILL BE  SUMMER 2008.

MIO: Ashanti has stated that Irv will not play the role of executive producer on her upcoming album, and that she will have the optimum level of creative freedom. Is that the case with your project also, or will Irv have his input?

7:  OPTIMUM FREEDOM REQUIRES OPTIMUM RESTRICTION. OTHERWISE YOU STAND THE CHANCE OF FRAGMENTING INTO NOTHING. IRV IS THE GRAVITY TO MY CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT. ANYONE WHO'S EVER WORKED WITH IRV GOTTI KNOWS HIS ROLE IS PRICELESS.  HIS ROLE IN CHANNEL 7 IS ABSOLUTE.

MIO: Speaking of Irv, we're all glad to hear you have worked out your differences, and again back to making that platinum sound with The Inc. What  made you decide to rekindle that relationship and come back to the label?

7:  ITS ALL A PROCESS

MIO: During those years when you and Irv were really dominating the charts, it was still rare of you to come out publicly and indulge in the fame and hype. Howcome you decided to remain in relatively in the background throughout those years?

7:  TOO MUCH CIRCULATION MAKES THE PRICE GO DOWN. GROWING UP WATCHING THE GREATS LIKE MICHAEL, PRINCE,  MADONNA OR EVEN LOOKING BACK TO THE BEETLES, YOU DIDN'T SEE THEM 'EVERYWHERE' 'ALL THE TIME', BUT WHEN YOU DID SEE THEM IT WAS AN EVENT.

MIO: Outside of your project, who have you been working with?

7:  A NEW GIRL GROUP FROM DETROIT. SHOUTS TOO ASHLEY JOI  WHO IS ON JA RULES NEW BANGER "FREE" AND STEPHANIE WHO IS ON JA'S RECORD WITH THE GAME "SUNSET" WHICH IS ANOTHER SMASH.AND I REALLY AM FEELING LLOYD. HE IS A REAL TALENT. I WANT TO WORK MORE WITH THAT BROTHER. HE'S ANOTHER CHANNEL. AS FAR AS MAKING RECORDS FOR OTHER ARTISTS OUTSIDE THE FAM, ITS PRETTY MUCH NO LONGER SOMETHING THAT I AM INTERESTED IN.

MIO: How do you approach making a record from a producer's point of view and an artist's point of view? How do they differ and which do you find more enjoyable?

7:  EVERYTHING WORKS THE SAME WAY. JUST DIFFERENT MINDSETS & PERSPECTIVES.

MIO: 'The Death and Rebirth of Music' is what reads on your myspace. It sounds very similar to Nase's 'Hip Hop is Dead'. Do you share the same sentiments in regards to the current state of the music industry?

7:  MUSIC IS CLEANING ITSELF. BY STATING "THE DEATH & REBIRTH OF MUSIC ...WHICH ONE ARE YOU A PART OF? ....TIME WILL TELL." I AM LETTING THOSE WHO WANNA KNOW TO PREPARE FOR CHANGE. THE WORST IS NOW BEHIND US. DEATH IS BUT A DOORWAY 2 THE NEXT LEVEL OF LIFE. SO NOW... ITS TIME 2 CELEBRATE.

MIO: It seems people are increasingly willing to sell their souls these days, and conform to the machine that manipulates and monopolizes. Do you think in this time of promotional stunts and exploitation of the stereotype; that true artistic ability and essentially great music, can once again re-capture the hearts and minds of the people?

7:  YES. BUT IT HAS TO BE AUTHENTIC. PEOPLE CAN SENSE WHEN IT'S NOT. THE AUDIENCE NOW IS MUCH MORE SAVVY.

MIO: Once again 7, thanks so much for your time and thoughts, it is much appreciated. Are there any last words you have for the people before we wrap
this up?

7:  BRACE YOURSELF. THE INC IS BACK.

Ja Rule Dons Santa Hat For Queens Kids

Ja Rule played Santa Claus when he brought loads of toys and games to school kids in Jamaica, Queens yesterday (December 28).

Rule (born Jeffrey Atkins) paid a visit to students at the Amistad Early Childhood Education Center. The kids apparently didn't mind Rule being three days late.

"It was wonderful," second-grader Clyde Quallis, 7, told New York's Daily News. "I'm so glad Ja Rule came to Amistad. I thank him very much for the present."

Ja donated the toys on behalf of his LIFE Camp Inc. foundation, an organization he co-founded to provide academic and social assistance to at-risk kids. Once the toys were distributed, Rule posed for flicks with the kids, signed autographs on poems the kids wrote for the visit. Fellow Queens native Salt of Salt 'N Pepa, joined Ja during his Santa stint.

"He does a lot of positive things, and people don't know that," Salt told the News

Irv Gotti Maps Out Inc. Comeback With Vanessa Carlton, Lloyd, Ja Rule & 7

Exec predicts 'four or five Murder Inc. records' in Billboard top 20 next year.

By Shaheem Reid

As he has for most of his career, Irv Gotti said he's going to have the last laugh very soon. Heck, he's laughing so much right now, he can barely get a whole sentence out.

"God!" he answered recently with a huge laugh about how he came to sign pop singer Vanessa Carlton to his infamous record label, the Inc. (see "Yeah, Irv Gotti Knows Who Vanessa Carlton Is He Just Signed Her"). "God himself [oversaw] this project. He's executive-producing all of my projects into 2007."

Gotti's laughter has been bolstered with what he called blessings bestowed upon him over the past few months. First, his artist Lloyd almost left his label which was in limbo without a distribution deal at the time to go to Atlantic. The R&B singer returned to the Inc with the heat rock "You," featuring Lil Wayne (see "Irv Gotti Rebuilding The Inc. With A Little Help From Lloyd"). Then Gotti inked a new deal with Universal Records and the Universal Music Group, not only getting the millions he wanted, but also a brand-new distribution deal. Then the proven Carlton joined his label which already has Ja Rule, Ashanti and hitmaking producer 7 Aurelius, who Gotti described as "Prince if he f---ed with hip-hop."

"I'm gonna make a prediction," I.G. said. "Don't be shocked and amazed if at one time, you're looking at the Billboard top 200, and in the top 20, you see four or five Murder Inc. records. You're gonna be like, 'I thought them f---ers was over.' "

The only place Gotti and company have been is in the boardroom making deals and in his studio making music. After Gotti was acquitted of money laundering last year, he severed ties with Def Jam and the Universal Music Group. Although he had nothing but great things to say about Def Jam, he spit what he called justified venom at some of the Universal Music Group executives, namely Jimmy Iovine and Doug Morris. He accused them of sabotaging his project, being ungrateful for the millions of dollars he made for the company and turning their backs on him as friends. Gotti maintains that he never had any beef with executive Zach Horowitz.

A few months ago, Horowitz and Morris contacted Gotti's lawyers about a meeting. "They wanted to sit back down and discuss things with me," Irv said. "At first my lawyer [asked the Universal execs], 'Are you crazy? You're going to get me fired. You know Irv ain't f---ing with y'all.' But then the lawyer said an interesting thing. He [told Universal's lawyers], 'Maybe I can get Irv to the meeting if you offer him his masters.' They were like, 'If you get him to the meeting, we want to talk to him.' "

Gotti said his talk with the two was "quintessential, real talk." "Doug explained the level of what I was getting myself into [with] the federal investigation," Gotti said. "He put it to me like, 'Irv, you put my job at risk. What did you want me to do? ... I'm the chairman. You put me in harm's way.' How he explained it to me, he made a lot of sense. No bullsh--."

Irv accepted Morris' apology but not before he conveyed one last emotion. "I turned it back to him like, 'I understand, but f---, man, you could have been my man still,' " Gotti said. " 'You could have called me and said, "I'm praying for you, I hope you get through this." ' We went at it. To be honest, after we went at it, I understood where he was coming from. He understood where I was coming from."

With everyone on the same page, all Gotti had to do was turn down an offer from the Warner Brothers Music Group and sign back with Universal which wasn't too difficult, because Warner underwhelmed him.

"The deal they put on the table wasn't even comparable. It was like night and day," he said. "I remember telling Dame Dash [about the Universal deal]. He said, 'What? Nobody is getting deals like this anymore. Sign that now!' I swear to you."

With the business done, all Gotti has to do is get back to making records. He said Carlton, Lloyd, 7, Ashanti and Ja Rule are all working on their 2007 releases now. Gotti's especially excited for Ja's comeback.

"He has a [song] he did that I made him a $100,000 bet on," Gotti said. "I said, 'We'll put the money in escrow and wait till we're 50 years old and we'll collect on the bet.' I said, 'Rule, you will not make a bigger [song] than this one we just made.' It's called 'Father Forgive Me.'

"Everybody says, 'Can Rule do it? Can he come back?' I say Rule is the best songwriter I have ever been around," Gotti said. "This guy makes big records in his sleep that people would love to have. You better not ever count me and Rule out. It's too much talent. I'm saying that through experience of me being around the best rappers alive."

The working title for Ja's next album is Love Is Pain. "It's a sequel of sorts to Rule's biggest-selling album, Pain Is Love," Gotti said. "Vanessa's album is tentatively called Heroes and Thieves. The title track is about how we don't know who comes in our lives, whether they be good or bad. A lot of her songs sound like they should be title tracks of movie soundtracks.'

Gotti said he and 7 will produce Carlton's project along with Rick Rubin and 3rd Eye Blind's Steven Jenkins. Linda Perry is writing some material too. Carlton also will appear on a sure single from Aurelius' album, Channel 7. "Sixty percent of his album is done," Gotti divulged. "Every song is like the biggest record anyone has ever heard. His first record is gonna be called 'M-A-K-E-L-O-V-E-T-O-M-E.' The record is like a Gwen Stefani 'Hollaback Girl' vibe, and we took the Hall and Oates' 'Method of Modern Love' hook. Instead of 'M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E,' Vanessa is singing, 'M-A-K-E-L-O-V-E-T-O-M-E.' "

The only project Gotti didn't give too much info on is Ashanti's next record. The label's princess is recording on her own, unlike her first three albums, which I.G. oversaw.

"She's the captain of her ship," he said. "With her project, I wouldn't even comment on it. I would say get [the info] from her. Bust she's still on Murder Inc., and it's still coming in '07, and it's all good."

D. Gift Is Back With A New Single!

Due to legal trouble, MPIRE's finest 'The Gift' has been forced to re-invent his MC moniker. It now stands as 'D.Gift' and he is back with his fiery new single 'Confession 2 Currency'. The song was previously released, but not in its entirety. Known for his creativity on the classic track 'Junie's Song',  D.Gift doesn't disappoint with this new song. The song is about how a human's life is dependent on money, however D cleverly disguises the message as a need for a female partner. The metaphor is maintained throughout the entire song, truly displaying D's talent and potential.

You can now download the full 3 verse song here

http://www.zshare.net/audio/d-gift-confessions-2-currency-mio-mp3.html

D.Gift also revealed that he has a mixtape set to drop on the 16th of December, the same date as his birthday. Make sure to purchase a copy of the new mixtape and wish D.Gift a happy b'day! There is also a new myspace page in the works.
