Irv Gotti King Magazine Article

Irving Lorenzo has been through many trials in the public eye. In a candid sit-down, The INC's bossman swears to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Tonight, Irv Gotti is playing poker. He's just finished hamming it up for some VH1 cameras, capturing footage for what the network hopes will be an R-rated Run's House with debauchery galore. On and off camera, he's loud, funny, boisterous, arrogant and money-hungry. He bets big and is without filter. In business, when he's making music with Ja Rule, Ashanti, Lloyd or Vanessa Carlton-yes, that Vanessa-he's all those things times 10. In fact, it's his tendency to gamble wildly and speak freely that has, on more than one occasion, messed up the business of doing business. He's even hedged his livelihood on an association with notorious gangster Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, who was sentenced to life in federal prison for racketeering, double murder-for-hire homicides and multiple drug convictions. But tonight, he's betting on the poker table and on the Eastern Conference semifinals, where the Pistons are romping Chicago in the fourth quarter of game two. "Let's go, Pistons! Let's go, Pistons!" he bellows. He's relaxed for a man on the early side of a comeback. But after beating a federal money-laundering trial, Irv likes his chances against the odds. Consider him the spiritual offspring of a great Spartan soldier, one of the 300 who stood their ground for three days in the face of a hailstorm of arrows and imminent death at the battle of Thermopylae. Sure, the Spartans fell after being outnumbered by the Persians-as Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter onced said, "Numbers don't lie"-but they didn't go down easily. Still skeptical of Irv's staying power? Just ask the federal government, 50 Cent or his wife. Better yet, ask Irv himself.

KING-How long did you get to enjoy the success of Murder Inc. before the 50 Cent and federal government drama stopped the flow?
IRV GOTTI-A couple of years. Like a three-, four-year run, then the hate came. I don't want to talk about homeboy too much, but I will say that the hate from 50 came from pure jealousy. We were on Jamaica Avenue (in Queens, New York) shooting the"Murder 4 Life" video, and I had the real O.G.s out there-Supreme, Slim-and they all giving us love. (Later, at a Queens nightclub,) 50 came up to Rule to give him a pound. I don't know if Rule gave him a pound or not, but that's the incident where he says, "Yo, I was with the guy who robbed Rule." Get the fuck outta here, yo. So that's why when you hear 50 talking about, "Yo, he seen me with..." Nigga, we wasn't thinking about you. Who the fuck are you? You're just a meaningless face. Now, that face turned into the biggest rapper in the world; that's just our luck. This is honest-to-God shit. That's why when me and Rule think about the beef, we are like, "Maybe we should have just given him a hug."

Did you see the feds coming?
No. You never see it 'cause you're on cloud nine. You're invincible. You don't think it's ever going to stop. You ain't seeing the feds. My brother-in-law had a friend who was an agent and told me years before, "Irv, my friend said he seen you on the most-watched list from the feds." I was like, "For what? I'm making records." I don't care if I was with Supreme. I'm not doing nothing wrong.

What was the call like when the feds raided you?
When I got the call, I was like, "What?" You can only imagine; It's not the NYPD, it's the feds. They hit my accountant's crib, my brother's apartment, my home in Westchester, but I lived in (Manhattan), and they didn't have that address.

All at the same time?
Same time, 6 a.m.

Who called you?
That call came from (estranged wife) Deb. She's like, "Yo, they here." My son J.J. got on the phone with me and said, "Dad, do you want me to beat up the bad guys?" He's like 3 or 4 years old (at the time). They surrounded the house. He knew they were there for Daddy and he was ready to ride (laughs).

What record label will lead the pack next year?
Murder Inc. Sooner or later someone is going to step up and give me that power. The minute someone steps up and says, "Here are the keys to the building," you're going to see some change, a powerhouse. And I'm gonna put my foot on everyone's neck, and I'm gonna leave it there for a minute and see how they deal with it.

Irv Gotti Speaks On V and Ja Rule

When the rumor mill started whirring last summer, it seemed like it had to be someone's idea of a joke. Were we seriously to believe that Irv Gotti the hip-hop impresario best known for bringing the world Ja Rule was on the brink of signing piano-pop princess Vanessa Carlton ("A Thousand Miles") to his label? But it was true: Last November, Gotti (pictured, left) formally announced that Carlton (right) had joined the family formerly known as Murder Inc. Unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I dropped by the Universal Music Group's offices yesterday afternoon to meet Gotti and get a sneak preview of Carlton's album Heroes and Thieves, currently scheduled for an October 9 release on The Inc. Records. Gotti's faced his share of drama, including high-profile 2005 money-laundering charges against him and his brother. (Both were acquitted.) He was remarkably open about those legal woes, recalling the advice he gave Carlton when she was ready to sign her contract: "I said, V, before you fully [commit], Google me!" But with The Inc. on an upswing thanks to the recent success of R&B smoothie Lloyd ("You"), Gotti was in a downright buoyant mood yesterday, singing along enthusiastically to every word of Carlton's new compositions. addCredit("Irv Gotti and Vanessa Carlton: Johnny Nunez/WireImage.com")He's acutely aware that his love for Carlton's music might strike outside observers as a bit unlikely but as far as he's concerned, they couldn't make a more natural pair. "I make great chick records," Gotti argued with characteristic bluntness, citing his past work with artists like Ashanti. He's got a point. Aside from superficial stylistic distinctions, how different was "A Thousand Miles," really, from a pop-friendly R&B cut like Ashanti's "Foolish"? Besides, Gotti said, major-label honchos work with artists outside of the genres with which they're most closely associated all the time. "They sign hip-hop. Why can't I sign a pop act or a rock act?" Cogent as they were, all those points would have added up to empty talk if the music didn't work. Luckily, the five new songs Gotti played sounded pretty great.Turns out he didn't try to transform Carlton into an urban diva after all. ("I think [her fans] would have beat me up," he explained.) Instead, the new material was upbeat, melodic, brightly-hued pop, full of twinkling arpeggios and tasteful strings in short, a bunch of new Vanessa Carlton songs. It's always hard to pick out a hit after an isolated listen, but if lead single "Nolita Fairytale" "Take away my record deal/You know, I don't need it/...I've found some kinda fairytale" isn't in heavy radio and MTV rotation by the end of summer, I'll be surprised. And possible second single "Hands on Me" (Irv: "It reminds me of The Breakfast Club!") sounded tailor-made for a rom-com trailer coming soon to a theater near you. Gotti couldn't resist hyping a few of his other upcoming projects. There was a time when I never thought I'd say these words, but I'll actually be checking for Ja Rule's new album (also due this fall), if only to catch the song where they somehow managed to get clearance for a prominent sample of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." Gotti was also excited about the upcoming VH1 reality show which, he said, chronicles his stormy relationship with his ex-wife and his attempts to mount a music-biz comeback after his federal acquittal. ("Run's House is like The Cosbys; they say my show is like The Sopranos," he said with customary modesty.) So whose second act are you looking forward to more, PopWatchers: Vanessa Carlton, Ja Rule, or Irv Gotti himself? And which unlikely artist should The Inc. sign next? (Say, what's Michelle Branch up to these days?)
