NY Post Article On Vanessa

October 11, 2007 -- THERE'S a very particular vibe to Vanessa Carlton's brick-walled, 2,600-square-foot Nolita loft, and Carlton has a distinct term for the warm, rustic space she's created.

"I call it 'Lord of the Rings' meets Victoriana," says the 26-year-old singer/songwriter - who is known for the 2002 smash "A Thousand Miles," and whose new album, "Heroes & Thieves," was released on Tuesday.

"All of these wooden pines, that's all out of a cabin," she says, referring to several wooden tables. "I love the woods, hence all this stuff out of the Shire. I like the whimsy. But then I also like Art Nouveau and curves, so you see a lot of curves here along with bursts of color."

The massive living room in the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment Carlton purchased in 2004 has been left purposefully airy. Her massive Andrianna Shamaris couch, several chairs she bought at Housing Works, the cowhide rugs and the touring Yamaha piano crafted just for her seem small compared to the uncluttered space around them.

October 7, 2007 -- Stevie Nicks inspired her to sing "Take away my record deal/go on I don't need it"

"That's about trying to figure out my place in the industry. I went on the road with Stevie Nicks, and she centered me. She prevented me from taking myself out of the fight."

She and Stevie got all BFF together. "We talk in the middle of the night. She would say, 'You need to carry the torch of singer/songwriters. The industry's in trouble if artists like you can't survive.' She took me under her chiffon wing."

She started in N.Y.C.

"I played The Sidewalk Cafe, the Bitter End, a couple of places on the Upper West Side. The Bitter End was a home for me."

Irv Gotti, Stephan Jenkins and Linda Perry produced different parts of the record. "I started enjoying myself with Linda, and not feeling like this was work, but like I was this bohemian artist. The Stephan sessions were super-intensive. He would say, 'Let's do a 50-piece choir here,' or, 'I'm just gonna start whistling.' If Irv doesn't like something, he can't fake it, and he has impeccable ears. These people never follow the rules, which is like me. We're all contrarians in our own

Ja Rule To Use Beatles Sample

A track on Ja Rule's upcoming album 'The Mirror', entitled 'Father Forgive Me' will feature a sample of The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby'.

This news comes after Wu Tang Clan, who supposedly had the first Beatles' sample clearance with 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' on their upcoming album, had musicians performing the song and not a sample of the actual recording.

Ja Rule told Billboard "We got the clearance, that's a win in itself!" Although with the credibility of Beatles sample claims of late, it is entirely possible that Ja Rule is trying to start another Ja vs. 50 Cent style fued.

Speaking of that feud, Rule said in that same interview "It wasn't really a beef, just something he was doing on record. It didn't faze me except when the public reacted. Then it was like, 'I've got to talk back.' But I never felt threatened; it was just words. People didn't understand that."

Calls to Apple Corp to clarify the situation were not immediately returned.

Ja Rule Takes A Look in The Mirror

Rapper Ja Rule, who had been laying low for a while, will finally release a new album on November 13. The Mirror will be his first CD in three years, and will serve as a reflection of the professional and personal turmoil he has gone through over the past few years, including a war of words with 50 Cent and a money-laundering case against the two heads of his label, The Inc., though Irv and Chris Gotti were both exonerated.

"When you've been in this business a long time, things sometimes spiral into something bigger than you expected," Ja said, according to Billboard. "Coming through that has made me wiser and more open-minded. Such situations not only build character, but show other people's character." He added that the album is "very grown-up... expressing a lot of true feelings. But it's a fun album as well -- a dramedy."

Fans have already been hearing the new single, "Body," featuring R&B newcomer Ashley Joi, and other tracks include "Father Forgive Me," which samples The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and "Damn," a song Ja wrote with Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Christina Milian in mind.

Ja also downplayed the alleged feud with 50 Cent, saying, "It wasn't really a beef, just something he was doing on record. It didn't phase me except when the public reacted. Then it was like, 'I've got to talk back.' But I never felt threatened; it was just words. People didn't understand that."

Vanessa Carlton goes out with 'Heroes & Thieves'

Singer/songwriter/pianist Vanessa Carltonis getting ready to release her third album on the unlikeliest of labels, and she'll support it with a handful of North American dates next month.

The 26-year-old songstress, who is best known for her 2002 hit single, "A Thousand Miles," will start off Nov. 3 in Las Vegas and visit a few West Coast cities before heading to Vancouver and then the East Coast. Dates are listed below.

Carlton's new record, "Heroes & Thieves," will be released tomorrow (10/9) on Irv Gotti's hip-hop label, The Inc. Records, formerly known as Murder Inc. Carlton became Gotti's first new signing after he joined forces with Universal Motown Records last year.

The singer had become a free agent after parting ways with A&M Records and was working out a deal with Universal when Gotti--who's had a string of urban successes with artists including Ashanti, Ja Rule, DMX and Jay Z--happened upon the meeting.

"She started playing and her voice, it completely took me over," the hip-hop producer said in a statement. "I start rambling, running my mouth basically, and just going crazy."

Carlton was thrilled with Gotti's reaction, despite the fact that the two come from completely different musical backgrounds.

"He was so positive and spontaneous," Carlton said in her bio. "I began to realize we were alike in a lot of ways. Along with his rare passion and vision, he has a finely tuned ear which made me believe he could guide any type of musical project."

The fruit of their efforts, "Heroes & Thieves," is "the best batch of songs I've ever written," the Grammy-nominated performer said. The set was co-produced by Gotti, Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins and Linda Perry, and features Carlton's mentor, Stevie Nicks, as a background vocalist. The video for the lead single, "Nolita Fairytale," is streaming at Carlton's website.
